3D printing powder: Introduction to nickel-based alloy (Inconel718) material properties

Inconel 718 Overview

Inconel 718 is a precipitation-strengthened nickel-based high-temperature and high-strength alloy.

Inconel 718 has good comprehensive properties in the temperature range of -253~700℃. The yield strength below 650℃ ranks first among deformed superalloys. It also has good fatigue, radiation, oxidation, and corrosion resistance. With its processing performance, welding performance and long-term structural stability, it can manufacture various parts with complex shapes. It has been widely used in the aerospace, nuclear energy, and petroleum industries within the above temperature range.

Another feature of this alloy is that the alloy’s structure is particularly sensitive to the thermal processing process. By mastering the alloy’s phase precipitation and dissolution rules and the relationship between the structure, process, and properties, reasonable and feasible process procedures can be formulated for various use requirements. A variety of parts are available to meet different strength levels and usage requirements.

Physical properties

MIX of the mechanical properties of the alloy at room temperature:

Characteristic of 3D Printing Nickel Alloy IN718 Powder

  1. Easy processability
  2. It has high tensile strength, fatigue strength, creep resistance and fracture strength at 700℃
  3. High oxidation resistance at 1000℃
  4. Stable chemical properties at low temperatures
  5. Good welding performance

Metallographic Structure

Alloy 718 has an austenitic structure, and the γ” phase generated after precipitation hardening gives it excellent mechanical properties. The δ phase generated at the grain boundaries during the heat treatment process gives it good plasticity.

Corrosion Resistance

No matter in high or low temperature environment, 718 alloy has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion. Alloy 718 has particularly excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures.

Process Performance and Requirements

Thermal processing

The suitable thermal handling temperature level is 1120-900 ° C. The cooling approach can be water quenching or various other fast cooling methods. After thermal processing, it must be hardened in time to make sure exceptional performance. The product should be heated up to the ceiling of the handling temperature level during thermal handling. In order to make sure the plasticity during processing, the final processing temperature level when the deformation gets to 20% must not be lower than 960 ° C.

Cold working

Cold functioning need to be carried out after strong option treatment. The job hardening price is higher than austenitic stainless steel, so the handling devices need to be adjusted appropriately, and there should be an intermediate annealing procedure during the cool working procedure

Welding process

The alloy has acceptable welding performance and can be bonded by argon arc welding, electron light beam welding, joint welding, place welding and other approaches.

Parts warm treatment process.

The warm treatment of aeronautics parts is usually performed according to the basic warm treatment system and the direct aging warmth treatment system.

Application scope

Because of its high temperature strength, excellent corrosion resistance and easy processability at 700°C, 718 can be widely used in various high-demand situations.

  1. Steam turbine
  2. Liquid fuel rocket
  3. Cryogenic engineering
  4. Acidic environment
  5. Nuclear Engineering

With the development of the aerospace industry, parts made of nickel-based high-temperature alloy Inconel718 are increasingly used, and the requirements for their surface quality are getting higher and higher…

Inconel718 is a precipitation-hardening nickel-chromium iron alloy with excellent mechanical properties and high plasticity at 700℃. It has high tensile strength, fatigue strength, creep strength, and fracture strength, and it is corrosion-resistant in high-temperature environments. Therefore, it can manufacture various parts with complex shapes and is widely used in high-performance aviation. Key rotating parts in the engine, such as discs, blades, shafts, rings, fasteners, etc.

Magnetic grinding is a new finishing process developed by applying magnetic fields to grinding. It is an effective means to improve the surface quality of parts.

Parts made of Inconel718 alloy are generally complex shapes, micro-structured parts, etc. Magnetic grinding processing has good flexibility and white adaptability and can efficiently solve the problem of finishing the processing of such parts.

Through the analysis of the failure phenomenon of Inconel718 alloy parts, it is known that the root cause of failure occurs or starts from the surface of the part, and the main reason is the poor surface quality of the part.

Finishing processing can effectively reduce surface roughness, improve the surface quality of parts, and extend the service life of parts [. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore the influence of various grinding factors on surface quality in magnetic grinding of Inconel718 alloy and to obtain optimized grinding process parameters.
